Rhodiola rosea contains numerous active chemical compounds. Estimates place the number of these active compounds between 12 and 28, although more research is required to determine exactly how many compounds exist in rhodiola and what precise roles they play, as well as how they interact with one another. The active compounds in rhodiola rosea can be broken down into six general categoriesrhodiola rosavin image: phenylpropanoids including rosavin, rosin, and rosarin (which are classified under the general name of "rosavins;" phenylethanol derivatives, such as salidroside (rhodioloside) and tyrosol; flavanoids, including rodiolin, rodionin, rodiosin, acetylrodalgin, and tricin; monoterpenes, including rosiridol and rosidarin; triterpenes, such as daucosterol and beta-sitosterol; and phenolic acids such as chlorogenic, hydroxycinnamic, and gallic acids.

Of these compounds, the most important are the rosavins (rosavin, rosarin, and rosin) and the salidroside or rhodioloside. (Tyrosol is also a critical active ingredient, although to a lesser degree than the other two). These compounds are believed to be the ones primarily responsible for rhodiola's antidepressant and anxiolytic effects, for they exert a positive influence on the brain's neurotransmitter levels, stimulating the production of serotonin and dopamine; they also stimulate the production of hormones such as epinephrine and norepinephrine, which result in elevated levels of happiness and a greater sense of well-being. salidroside imageIn addition, rosavins and salidrosides are believed to regulate the production of the stress hormone cortisol, keeping it at a level at which it is able to combat infection and injury without putting too much pressure on the immune system. Finally, the active compounds in rhodiola have been shown to positively affect the central nervous system and cardiovascular system, leading to greater resistance to injury, stress, and fatigue.

While most commercial extracts place more emphasis on rosavin concentrations, some research suggests that it is, in fact, the salidroside that is the more active of the two. However, it seems clear that both the rosavins and the salidroside play an important role in rhodiola's effectiveness and work together to strengthen and heal the body.
